Forever trying to return your lefty serve

Dear Karla,

In my head I am trying to return your swooshing lefty serve. I can see it coming, but I outstretch my arm and it zips past me.

This feels unfair as I too am left-handed and it's on my forehand, but no. Your point.

You grin and start your service action for the next point before I've even caught my breath.

Now I'm back sitting on the grass outside the clubhouse this summer, at one of the first Friday socials.

You're in your son's green T-shirt and look so tanned and happy. You joke about nicking your kids' clothes - finally. You are in a mischievous mood but, responsible always, you insist that Nigel and I socially distance our seats. We do so and apologise sheepishly.

Now I'm cycling home via Greendale and there you are, coming the other way, on your way to the club. It's that grin again and a quick chat about who's playing tonight.

Karla, we will always want to see you coming up the path and turning towards the courts.

Every time we play we'll think of you - and miss you terribly.

Thank you so much for all the generosity you showed, to me and countless others, in making NDLTC such a special place.

Forever trying to return your serve.
